In October 2012 Selina Trepp decided that she would limit her practice by not bringing any additional materials into her studio. To work within this depleting system she recycles past works into material for new pieces. This restriction has given her the space to use creative problem-solving and find surprising results in the production of work that a welcomes viewers and participants into a formally cohesive and emotionally wrought environment.
Trepp’s exhibition, Selina Trepp, doing it with Love, features stand-alone animation pieces and drawing installed within the gallery space of Lease Agreement. The exhibition will open Saturday, February 8, and will run until March 7. This exhibition is held in conjunction with I work with what I have is an immersive installation of animated video as score for musical improvisation.
Selina Trepp (Swiss/American b.1973) is an artist researching economy and improvisation. Finding a balance between the intuitive and conceptual is a goal, living a life of adventure is a way, embarrassment is often the result. Trepp works across media, combining performance, installation, painting, and sculpture to create intricate setups that result in photos, drawings and animations. In addition to the studio-based work, Selina is active in the experimental music scene. In this context she sings and plays the videolah, her midi controlled video synthesizer, to create projected animations in real-time as visual music. She performs with a varying cast of collaborators and as one half of Spectralina, her long running audiovisual collaboration with Dan Bitney.
